With the Covid pandemic upon us most of the spring sailing events have been canceled or postponed. When the chat started regarding sailing our Hobie 17s, I thought what a perfect boat to stay isolated - with the wings in place no one can get within 12 feet of you! We also have an aggressive fleet with very good sailors at the top of their game. As the event got closer we kept each other informed and made it happen.
CRAM helped as we had our own fleet and Race Committee, Paul Krutty and crew, even recognized the speed of these boats and provided us with a separate start to keep the races flowing.
The Hobie 17 is a very misunderstood, quirky little boat. Developed in 1985, she was the first boat designed around the composite tip (comp tip) mast. With it's bendy tapered construction skippers had to learn how it would flatten the sail and give a bit in the puffs. Turns out they are very nimble and fast in a blow with plenty of bow to keep you safe downwind. It's been my experience that when you can sail a H17 fast, tack well with one sail and climb down from one wing to the other, you will improve on any craft you choose to sail.
